We reteach and review concepts/skills. We are additional teachers to assist the classroom teacher with learning goals they have set for their students.
TLC teachers also create and manage AOD Accommodation Plans.
Classroom teachers recommend students who need to have some extra support learning a concept or skill. For instance, in TLC 3-5, a teacher could send three students who need help with writing their introductory paragraph one day, and the next day she may send two students who need to be retaught how to put fractions in lowest terms. The TLC teachers also work with students who have AOD plans.
TLC 6-8 provides Learning Links, a class for students to meet several times a week to receive extra help. Learning Links is only available to students by invitation.
We are able to have smaller groups and discuss questions in greater detail. Students can receive immediate feedback and use manipulatives to reinforce concepts.
According to studies, learning a second language does not confuse or slow academic progress. It is actually very beneficial to start learning a second language at a young age to acquire a near-native pronunciation and intonation.
It depends on the class and the grade level; the older grades are more likely to receive homework.
In the younger grades, students learn basic computer skills such as using the mouse and keyboard, navigating websites, and word processing. As the years go on, students also learn to create slide presentations, enter data in spreadsheets, type with correct technique (Typing.com), design websites, edit videos, solve coding puzzles (Code.org), and write their own code (Khan Academy- Intro to JavaScript). Students also learn important guidelines for online safety and citizenship.
All OLV students are assigned a school Google account and learn to use Google apps including Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drawings, Drive, Forms, and Classroom.
Students use Google Chromebook laptops for computer class in the lab and sign in during each class with their OLV Google account. External mouses are available for all lab computers.
Students in Preschool and Kindergarten are allowed to check out books from our Picture Book and Easy Reader sections. As the years go on in the elementary grades, students are gradually introduced to junior non-fiction, beginner chapter books, and eventually our full selection of fiction novels and more advanced non-fiction. We have thousands of books to choose from in a variety of genres and topics!
We also have a “young adult” fiction section for middle school students only to access during Literature class.
Students in Preschool to 5th grade check out books during their library class and may keep them for one week at a time. In grades 2-5, students can renew their books for an additional 1-2 weeks also.
